Change letterspace indesign10/29/2022 ![]() ![]() The problem with this method is that most fonts have very limited sets of automatic kerning pairsfew fonts contain more than 128 defined pairs, barely enough pairs to cover the most-common letter combinations. When you choose metric, InDesign reads the kerning pairs defined in the screen font and applies them to the selected characters. InDesign offers two automatic kerning methods, metric and optical (you’ll find them on the Kerning pop-up menu in the Character palette). This means that the next line might have dramatically different spacingand wide spacing variation between lines can make text hard to read as well as unappealing to look at. As such programs arrange characters on a line, they’re considering only the spacing of that line. These problems occur because every desktop-publishing program other than InDesign uses a single-line composer to compose lines of text. Anyone who’s serious about type knows that a large part of typesetting time is spent “walking the lines”fixing bad line breaks and poor word spacing and letterspacing. The jewel in this publishing program’s crown is Adobe Multi-line Composer. InDesign is easily the best desktop-typesetting program available, and its release raises the bar on the competition. I’m an old typesetting hand, and InDesign has features I only dreamed of seeing in a desktop-publishing program until now. But there is one area where its refinements represent a significant breakthrough: typography. It’s commonly used on prominent pieces of text, such as headlines and logos.Despite its radical new architecture and the claims of advertising materials, Adobe InDesign is an evolutionary not a revolutionary advance in desktop publishing. What is Kerning? Kerning is the process of increasing or decreasing the space between individual characters, adjusting the position of letters in relation to others. When Metrics – Roman Only is applied to CJK OpenType fonts, only the Roman characters will be kerned with kerning pairs as if Metrics were set. When Metrics – Roman Only is applied to Roman OpenType fonts, kerning is the same as when Metrics is selected. ![]() ![]() The default setting is Metrics – Roman Only. What’s the default kerning setting for CJK OpenType? When a typeface is created one of the tasks the type designer has to complete (apart from drawing each character) is to create kerning values. When do you create kerning values for a typeface? Optical kerning adjusts the spacing between adjacent characters based on their shapes, and is optimized for use with Roman glyphs. InDesign uses metrics kerning by default so that specific pairs are automatically kerned when you import or type text. What do you need to know about kerning in InDesign?
